There are a couple of reasons, but the main one is that our defending was absolutely awful. We never closed down Ghana players and allowed them to retain much of the possession, especially in the first half and the overtime period. The first goal came off a turnover by Ricardo Clark in midfield, but Kevin Prince Boateng should never have been allowed to run 50 yards and get that shot away. Jay Demerit or Steve Cherundolo should have closed him down and made the tackle. Ghana second goal can also be blamed on the defense. Asamoah Gyan was able to trap and bring down a long clearance ball that Bocanegra should have been able to head away. If you look at replays of Bocanegra challenge on that clearance ball, you can see that he almost doesn even try to defend the ball. Of course, once Gyan had trapped it, Demerit failed to close down again and he made us pay.
