AIDS in Africa Does Not Deter Prostitutes Preparing for World Cup Fans
Sex workers are flocking to South Africa, which is preparing to host this year’s soccer World Cup event. AIDS in Africa is a serious problem, but prostitutes believe that FIFA attendees will throw caution to the wind. Does it have the making of a pandemic? Prostitutes Flock to Africa
The Global Post reports that soccer preparations are reaching a fever pitch in South Africa. Slated to host the FIFA World Cup, Cape Town looks forward to a huge influx of soccer fans during the month of June. Alongside the fans are those who are hoping to make a quick buck from the mostly male attendees: sex workers. Thus far some 40,000 prostitutes are flocking to the area. Some of the sex workers come from Russia and Nigeria.
Estimates suggest that one in five adults is HIV positive in this area of the world, although under reporting makes it possible for these numbers to be considerably higher. The international AIDS charity Avert explains that life expectancy figures due to AIDS are now down to about 40 years in some African countries.
Condoms are distributed to help prevent spread of the disease. In fact, while it is true that about a billion condoms have been requested in anticipation of the World Cup frenzy, it is noteworthy that testosterone and alcohol are highly likely to prevent some attendees from exercising good sense.
Prostitutes and AIDS

Although condoms will be available, it is questionable if they are used. Many a sex worker is not likely to be in a position to insist on and enforce condom use by clients.

The arena has four locker rooms, with an area of about 200 square meters each, massage rooms and hot tubs.
As for sustainability, one of the arena’s best features is a solar power station, a condition necessary to obtain LEED certification from the Green Building Council (CGB). The photovoltaic station located on a property next to the arena can have its surplus injected into the general system for use by other consumers. The sustainability project includes the use of solar energy and rainwater, natural ventilation and the management of solid residues.

Arena Pernambuco is part of Cidade da Copa (Cup City), a broader urbanization project for S Louren da Mata, to be kicked off after the World Cup.
