Monaco striker Radamel Falcao doubtful for FIFA World Cup due to surgery on left knee
Monaco: Monaco and Colombia striker Radamel Falcao says he has not given up hope of playing in this year’s World Cup despite tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during a French Cup game on Wednesday.
Falcao will have major surgery to repair the damage in coming days, and typically rehabilitation from such injuries takes many months.
“I am not going to hide that my sadness is huge,” Falcao said Thursday on Twitter. “My heart is destroyed. But I still hold faith of playing at the World Cup. God makes the impossible possible. I believe in Him”.
Falcao was stretchered off the field after damaging his knee during a French Cup match on Wednesday when he was tackled by Chasselay center half Soner Ertek.
“The player will have surgery in next few days. Doctors will do everything possible to speed up recovery,” Monaco said in a statement.
Falcao has 20 goals in 51 international appearances, including nine goals in qualifying for this year’s World Cup.
“He choose to go to Portugal, where he knows doctors he trusts, and we’re following his condition,” Colombian federation president Luis Bedoya said.
Falcao was examined in Portugal by Dr. Jose Carlos Noronha, who told the Colombian radio station Caracol that swelling must subside before a date for the operation can be set.
“I cannot say that he will miss the World Cup,” Noronha said.
After Wednesday’s game, Monaco coach Claudio Ranieri criticised referee Philippe Kalt for not taking firmer action against Chasselay’s players.
“If Falcao has a serious injury, it’s the referee’s fault. It’s not possible to let things go like that,” Ranieri said. “When there are fouls, you have to whistle. When it’s a bad foul, you have to get a yellow card out, and if there’s another bad foul, then it’s a red. Tonight I saw neither.”
FIFA World Cup Previews
FIFA World Cup Previews Group G
Group G is the group of death with one of Brazil, Portugal and the Ivory Coast definitely not making progress to the knockout stages. Which side will be going home early? Will North Korea, the fourth side in the group, be able to take any points against these three world class teams? BetRepublic previews the group here. They go into the nineteenth edition of the finals as second favourites at 5/1 behind Spain (4/1) to claim their sixth world crown. Their coach, Dunga, has added a defensive solidarity to the well known attacking flair of Brazil and in their qualifying run they conceded just eleven goals in eighteen matches, whilst being the top scoring side in South America with thirty three goals.
Brazil have all of the qualities necessary to win this tournament in ability, experience and tactical know how and having just leapfrogged Spain to become the number one side in the world I will be surprised if they do not claim a sixth title. With Brazil being the most likely side to win the group who will follow them into the knockout stages? Will it be number three in the world Portugal or number twenty seventh Ivory Coast? William Hill believe that it will be Portugal following the Brazilian side into the last sixteen stage of the tournament despite them finishing runners up to Denmark in UEFA Group 1.
The Portuguese side got off to a great start to their campaign by beating Malta 4 0 then lost to Denmark and then followed that up with three 0 0 draws to leave them out the verge of failing to qualify. However they won their last three games, scoring eight goals without conceding, to beat Sweden to second in the group by a point. They reached the finals by beating Bosnia Herzegovina 1 0 home and away despite missing their talisman, Cristiano Ronaldo for both matches. These finals will be the fifth occasion that Portugal have played in and in the previous four finals they have failed to progress from the group twice and reached the Semi Finals on the other two occasions. Should they progress from this group, and have history repeat itself, then Portugal could be on for a great run in the tournament.
However, Portugal will have to surpass the hurdle of the Ivory Coast, who are undoubtedly the most talented side in African football. Their ranks boast the likes of Chelsea Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou as well as Arsenal Emmanuel Eboue and Manchester City star Kolo Toure amongst many players plying their trade at the top levels of European football. This is the second time that the Ivory Coast have qualified for the finals and on both occasions they have had tough qualifying groups. This time they have to get past Brazil and Portugal and on their only other appearance, in Germany four years ago, they were drawn with Argentina, the Netherlands and Serbia and Montenegro. They were beaten by both Argentina and the Netherlands last time around, but with their squad having vastly improved in the four years since Germany they have a great chance of making the knockout stage this time around.
Group G 2010 FIFA World Cup Soccer Betting Tip North Korea are really the forgotten side in this group, with all the attention being focused on who will qualify out of Brazil, Portugal and the Ivory Coast. They faced a gruelling qualification battle that spanned twenty months and sixteen matches, but they managed to finish as runners up behind their more illustrious neighbours, South Korea, in the final qualifying group to book their return to the World Cup for the first time since 1966. The finals in England was the only time before now that North Korea have qualified for a World Cup and they reached the Quarter Finals but were beaten 5 3 by Portugal, despite leading 3 0. Unfortunately for them this time around they have gotten an extremely difficult draw and I cannot see them progressing past the group stages. Who will progress to the last sixteen stage? North Korea will not make it past the group stages in South Africa.
They have gotten the toughest possible draw and they will be lucky to get anything at all from their three matches. This leaves the big three sides to fight it out for the two qualifying places. I feel that Brazil are the most balanced side at the finals and will win the group, and very possibly the tournament outright. In their eighteen qualifying matches they scored three goals for every one they conceded and finished with the most goals scored and least conceded.
So who will follow them through? Will it be Portugal who struggled through their qualifying group, but can be sure that Cristiano Ronaldo will shine on the world biggest stage? Or will it be the Ivory Coast with their all round squad strength and expert Premier League marksman Didier Drogba? I feel that the Ivory Coast are a better overall side than Portugal and they will take the second spot in the group. Your email address will not be published. Fields marked with asteric are required.
2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil
2014 FIFA World Cup group stage analysis and predictions The 2014 FIFA World Cup is only 40 days away and the groups look very interesting. The groups are and winners are Group A: Brazil; Croatia; Mexico; Cameroon. Brazil and very hard fought second will be Croatia because Brazil has recovered there fast and smooth tempo of play that they lost for a bit, then you perfect mix of young and old talent with Neymar, Marcelo, Fred, Hulk, Dani Alves, David Luiz. and so on and so on. Croatia will take because i feel Cameroon may have the pace but not sufficient level of play and Mexico i feel does not get enough competition in there qualifiers to help them improve.
Group B: Spain; Netherlands; Chile; Austria. This group is very clean and cut choice it would be the 2 of Europe’s powerhouse teams Spain and Netherlands. Unfortunately for Chile a team who grown in the past few years they would have play two of the best national teams in the world and i would say they will not make it to the best of 16. Group C: Colombia; Greece; Cote d’Ivoire; Japan. This group is going to be much more even and hard fought but Colombia who is going through a very good moment in there football but the x factor would be if Radamel Falco will recover from his knee injury because he is a very important peace in there on offense. Then the second team that will make it would be Japan barely muscling out Cote d’Ivoire because Japan is a team raising the level on the way they play football.
Group D: Uruguay; Costa Rica; England; Italy. Sadly enough Costa Rica does not have a shot in this group. England and Italy would be my choices to make it to the next round because both teams are trying to recover there dominance in European football. Although do not be surprised if Uruguay pulls an upset on a Italy team who are still not at there highest level yet. Because Uruguay has many players in there prime like Luis Suarez, Cavani, Godin, and Fernando Muslera. England to me is a sleeper that a lot of people are overlooking and i can see they moving all the way the semi finals.
Group E: Switzerland; Ecuador; France; Honduras. France will dominate this group and will not lose a single game in this group. Coming in second will be Ecuador that can out class Switzerland and Honduras on the field having a strong overall squad but there defense can be very inconsistent. Group F: Argentina; Bosnia and Herzegonvina; Iran; and Nigeria. Argentina lucked out in with this group because this is the group that has the lowest level of football. Argentina will win all there games in this group and humiliate all of they by a large score because of the large amount of all stars in Argentina that are going trough there best moment. In second will Nigeria for the main fact that Nigeria is a fast and strong physical team.
Group G: Germany; Portugal; Ghana; USA. This is a very simple cut dry group Germany and Portugal will move on to the next stage. Germany is one of my favorites on making it to the finals and Portugal i can only see them making it to the quarter finals. Although if Ronaldo, Pepe, Neto, Coentrao, and Moutinho can perform at there highest level they can be sleeper for the final. Ghana and USA will not stand a chance against Germany and Portugal in this group. Group H: Belgium; Algeria; Russia; and Korea Republic. Belgium I feel is the most under rated team in this world cup who has the potential to go far. They will come in first and Russia will come in a hard fought second but the real challenge is Korea Republic. Which that match up has shown to to be very even but i will give to Russia.
This world cup group stage will be very interesting and my 3 favorite teams from the group stage to make it to the final would be Brazil, Germany, and Spain. My 3 sleepers are Belgium, Portugal, and Japan who have the potential to pull some upsets past the group stage.
